Abstract
The debate concerning cultural appropriation continues to be a source of controversy. The scope of the debate has expanded from the arts to include food, fashion, and other areas of culture. The grounds on which people object to cultural appropriation are also shifting. At least in philosophical circles, people are less inclined to object to cultural appropriation on the grounds that it can involve theft. Instead, cultural appropriation is thought to be, at least some of the time, a form of oppression, invasion of privacy, or objectification. This paper will express skepticism about some arguments for the conclusion that cultural appropriation is objectionable, while granting that some appropriation is objectionably harmful or offensive
